There are currently 184 contracting parties that are part of the FAO legal website. Of the 13 Caribbean countries, only three are considered part of Latin America: Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. Each of these countries has a complex history with both native and European influences. While all parts of Latin America have had foreign rule at some point, there are still six territories that have not chosen to become independent.
Jamaica, Belize, Suriname, and Guyana are not included in Latin America due to their language and colonial influences. There are a total of twelve independent countries that make up South America, but only ten of them can be listed as part of Latin America. Barbados is an interesting case when it comes to Latin America. It is considered part of Latin America due to the extensive Spanish reign over the island from the 15th to the 19th centuries. In general, Latin America is understood to consist of the entire continent of South America, in addition to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean islands, whose inhabitants speak a Romance language.

Today, although most of Latin America still speaks Romance languages, the geographical term also includes some countries and territories in the Caribbean and South America where languages such as English and Dutch are spoken. Venezuela, like many other Latin American countries, is home to thousands of unique species, such as the three-toed sloth.
People have inhabited Latin America for thousands of years, starting with native groups such as the Olmecs, Mayans, Incas and Aztecs. However, the fusion of European and native cultures is what has made Latin America the rich cultural area it is today. So is Barbados considered part of Latin America? The answer is yes! Despite its unique characteristics compared to other Latin American countries, Barbados' history with Spanish rule makes it part of this region.
