How can we promote gender equality and women's rights?

Access to health care and sex education, including contraceptive methods and the right to choose when and if a woman wants to have children and how many, is a vital pillar of gender equality. Commitments and bold measures are needed to accelerate progress, including by promoting laws, policies, budgets and institutions that promote gender equality. It is essential to invest more in gender statistics, as less than half of the data needed to monitor Goal 5 is currently available. Gender equality and women's empowerment have long been part of USAID's work.

We focus on programming around the world and work to shape and institutionalize policies that empower women and girls.
